Artist Studio: Burlington, VT

Collaboration with Elizabeth Calabrese Architects

Wild Branch Builders was approached by a Vermont based artist to create a private pottery studio on her Old North End property in Burlington. The studio offers nearly 270 degrees of elevated windows which wrap the East, West and North elevations to allow an abundance of indirect light to filter into the space. The soft light diffuses warmly off the natural wood interior of the studio. The ceiling offers exposed 3 x 6 rough sawn hemlock joists that are topped with wide rough sawn pine barn boards, the combination results in a comforting texture that feels delicate in the warmer seasons and cozy in winter. The studio has an accessible low pitch roof that offers great views of the green mountains, as well as provide an additional useable space within the building footprint. Much of the lumber was sourced from local mills in order to reduce the embodied energy involved with shipping and processing of construction materials; and to showcase Vermont’s natural resources and provide support for our local forestry and mill community.
